Coach Dan has been in or around the pool since he was little. He began his involvement in the NVSL with the “Little Rat” program at Rutherford Pool. He swam competitively through the age of 18 including NVSL, club, and with the Woodson high school team where served as a captain. In fact, his first competitive experience occurred during an NVSL A meet at Parliament. He has worked with swimmers of all ages and ability levels in private and group settings. He is a USA Swimming certified coach. Outside of the summer NVSL summer season, Dan is a coach with York Swim club where he has coached both Seniors and Age Groupers. When he is not around the pool, Coach Dan works as a Civics teacher at Lake Braddock where he also serves as the Assistant Varsity Swim Coach. He looks forward to working with the families and swimmers at Parliament this summer and helping create more wonderful summertime memories.
Hello!!! I am so excited to be back at Parliament for my 7th year coaching! I have been competitively swimming for 7 years as well for Lake Braddock Secondary School, Machine Aquatics, Ravensworth swim team, and Parliament!! I love swimming and coaching with all my heart and want to create a fun environment for kids of all levels. Summer swim has always been my favorite part of summer and I want to give all kids the same fun and welcoming community as I always had. I can help kids who are just learning to swim to kids who are trying to break records!!
Hello! I have been swimming at parliament since I moved here the summer after fourth grade along with swimming on club teams(Machine and Makos, 4 years), and for the Lake Braddock swim team for 1 year. I have been doing any volunteering I was allowed to do at the pool since I can remember. This will be my second year as the Mini's head coach and I am so excited to be back. I have coached Parliament winter swim lessons for the past three years. Next year I will be attending James Madison University to study elementary education. I love working with younger children and have lots of experience both in and out of the pool. I hope that I can start kids' passions for swimming young this year. My goals are to make sure everyone is having fun while also learning the basics of swimming.
Hi, my name is David Avila and this will be my 7th year at Parliament Pool! I've been on the swim and dive team since I joined and I have been swimming since I was 4. I spent this past winter coaching for Parliament winter swim, and attending winter dive practices. I am also a member of the Lake Braddock swim and dive teams, along with the Fairfax Foxes club swimming team. You'll likely see me at the pool every day, whether I'm practicing, coaching, lifeguarding, or simply just hanging out. I love being in and around Parliament and I'm so excited to be coaching during the summer season! We're going to have a great season with lots of fun, excitement, and of course, swimming!
My name is Maura Caines, and I’m a rising junior in high school. I’ve been swimming with the Panthers since I was eight, and started swimming in the NVSL at seven. My favorite summer event is the 50 breaststroke, and I currently swim on the Fairfax Foxes club swim team. I started volunteering with the Mini Panthers in 2018, and have been a Panthers coach since 2019. I love coaching for Parliament, teaching the younger kids how to swim and be confident in the water, and being a part of the kids’ swimming experience. I’m excited and ready for a great summer season at Parliament!
Hello! My name is Laura Lafreniere and I’m a volunteer coach for the panthers! I have been on the swim team for 9 years I am so excited to coach! I plan to make this year extra fun for everyone especially since we didn’t get a season last year :)) This is my 3rd year coaching and I am so thrilled!
Hi! My name is Ben Merlo and I will be attending my first year at Virginia Tech in the fall to study mechanical engineering. This will be my 8th year as a panther but I've been swimming in the NVSL since I was 5 and swam on the Lake Braddock Highschool swim team this year. Aside from swimming, I also play volleyball and ultimate frisbee. I began coaching this winter with our Parliament winter swim program and have loved it so I am glad to be returning for the summer. I can't wait for this season to start so we can all have fun, get faster, and make memories as a team!
